Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge is a migration destination for snow geese and sandhill cranes in  New Mexico. The birds number in the thousands and are very noisy.

White Sands National Monument is south of the bird refuge and is also in New Mexico. The silence is polar opposite from the loud birds in Bosque. The white sand is made up of gypsum.
